Urgent action against McCarry visit
The Cuba Solidarity Campaign issued the following statement today on the visit of Caleb McCarry to the UK The secretive visit of the Cuba Transition Coordinator, Caleb McCarry, to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in the next few days is an insult to the people of Britain. This visit must be strongly opposed by all those interested in peace and cooperation between the UK and Cuba.It symbolises yet another attempt by the US administration to pressure the UK into adopting its aggressive and failed anti-Cuba policy.The fact is that McCarry has only one remit and that is regime change in Cuba. As head of the US government’s Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba (CAFC), he holds a post equal to that held by Paul Bremer as the administrator of the US occupation in Iraq in 2003 and 2004. Why is the FCO is meeting with McCarry, when as far as we know the UK has no direct equivalent to his position? This goes against the UK’s stated policy of 'constructive engagement' with the island.As head of CAFC, Caleb McCarry is responsible for a dangerous US policy of aggression, intervention and occupation of Cuba - one which would lead to dire consequences for the people of Cuba and the Caribbean. It is no coincidence that McCarry is lobbying European governments now. In June, the EU will again review the measures imposed against Cuba since 2003. Their vote on this “common positon” brings into question whether the EU has an independent stance towards the island.McCarry's visit highlights once again why the UK Government must be pressured into taking a more positive approach to Cuba. Even within the current EU common position countries such as Spain, France and Italy have made huge strides in cementing more normal trading, scientific and cultural exchange between Cuba and their countries. Yet here in the UK we have seen a massive 48 per cent decrease in United Kingdom exports to Cuba between 2000 and 2006, and a government that did nothing to penalise companies like Hilton and Barclays for adopting US directives on trading with the country.
Sweden Warned of US Cuba Scheme
Stockholm, Apr 12 (Prensa Latina) The Swedish government was warned of new pressures by the United States on European Union (EU) countries to join the growing hostility against Cuba.The warning was contained in a letter by Tomas Wilden, member of the Swedish-Cuba Association, to Per Norstrom and Hanna Lambert, deputy director and official, respectively, of the Swedish Foreign Ministry´s Americas desk.The text called attention to the tour of different European countries by Caleb McCarry, US State Department Cuba Transition Coordinator.The purpose of his tour is to force European leaders to reject lifting measures adopted by the EU against Cuba in 2003, a subject that will be analyzed in June by the continental organization, the letter warned.Elimination of the EU position would mean an improvement of relations with the Island, Wilson adds.The letter expresses amazement that a foreign power like the United States considers the social system in Cuba unacceptable and assumes the right to threaten, attack, blockade and use violence to work against it.It adds that the Washington plan against Cuba has a secret section that "can only refer to none other than military actions."Widen also presides the Swedish committee for the freedom of the Five Cuban anti-terrorists jailed in the United States.

Ese fue el sentir de numerosos internautas de varios países que enviaron mensajes de apoyo a Olga Salanueva y Elizabeth Palmeiro, esposas de René González y Ramón Labañino, durante un foro interactivo efectuado este viernes «En los momentos de flaqueza, cuando uno piensa que está luchando contra un capitalismo indestructible, se buscan referentes. Los Cinco Héroes me han ayudado muchas veces a seguir. No tenemos derecho a claudicar cuando hay gente como ellos que sacrifican su vida de una forma tan generosa».Este conmovedor mensaje, enviado por Quique Guerrero desde Luxemburgo, fue uno de los muchos que recibieron en la mañana de este viernes, en un foro interactivo, los familiares de los patriotas cubanos que cumplen injustas condenas en cárceles norteamericanas.Durante poco más de dos horas, desde la página web http://foro.jovenclub.cu, Olga Salanueva y Elizabeth Palmeiro, esposas de René González y Ramón Labañino, respectivamente; junto a las sobrinas de Tony y Fernando, Maricarla y Laura, estuvieron en línea para actualizarnos sobre el estado del caso.Los familiares informaron que el proceso judicial se encuentra en la segunda etapa de apelaciones de la vista oral del 20 de agosto de 2007, en la que se presentaron tres aspectos por parte de la defensa del caso.«Estamos en espera de la respuesta que debe emitir un tribunal compuesto por tres jueces, y como que la ley no fija un tiempo para esto, la demora puede ser mayor. En esta última vista oral tuvimos una amplia participación de importantes personalidades jurídicas de varios países, lo que favoreció la divulgación del caso», argumentaron.Aunque la respuesta del proceso se dilate —destacaron—, debemos continuar el trabajo de solidaridad, porque en este sentido la opinión pública nos puede ayudar a romper el muro de silencio que ha mantenido el imperio en estos casi diez años de ilegal encierro.Ante la preocupación de los internautas por conocer la dolorosa situación de las visitas de los familiares a los Cinco, las cónyuges explicaron que se hacen cada vez más escasas, debido al engorroso sistema que les ha impuesto el gobierno de los Estados Unidos para otorgarles las visas.«Se está castigando adicionalmente a estos hombres con las visitas, que como promedio nos permiten hacerlas una vez cada un año o año y medio. En el caso de Adriana y Olga ya son ocho las negativas de visado sin justificación legal ni moral alguna, por lo que en todo este tiempo no han podido ver a sus esposos en prisión», denunciaron en este foro.Olga, Elizabeth, Maricarla y Laura también agradecieron el afecto y el apoyo que les llegó en los mensajes emitidos desde las diversas partes del mundo (Ucrania, Vietnam, Luxemburgo, entre otros países), y añadieron que son muchos los amigos de todos los continentes que se han unido en más 200 Comités de Solidaridad para acompañarnos en esta lucha por el regreso de los Héroes a su patria.Este foro, convocado por la Unión de Jóvenes Comunistas y las organizaciones estudiantiles del país, inaugura una nueva Campaña en defensa de la liberación de estos cubanos, que se extenderá hasta abril del año próximo.

Abel Prieto propone materializar manifiestos políticos en acciones defensivas
Caracas , ABN.- 'Tenemos que lograr que estos encuentros no sean una sucesión de discursos y se realice un plan de acción en defensa de la verdad', expresó el ministro de cultura cubano, Abel Prieto, en el Encuentro de Intelectuales y Artistas por la Paz, que se realiza en el hotel Alba Caracas. 'Es imprescindible ir más allá de los manifiestos, de los documentos y de los talleres para pasar a la acción. Existe la necesidad de que este tipo de encuentros logre convertirse en algo mucho más activo, que efectivamente elabore planes de acción sin renunciar a esa horizontalidad organizativa que nos caracteriza y que nos da fuerza', afirmó el ministro. Sobre la situación de nuestros países, dijo que 'pareciera que no tuviéramos memoria y en cada encuentro arrancamos de cero, como si olvidáramos los temas que acabamos de discutir en un evento pasado. Debemos evitar que la impunidad se instale en cada acción de los consorcios de prensa españoles Prisma y el País en contra de Venezuela y Cuba'.

Half of OFAC April 2008 Civil Penalties are for violations of Cuban Embargo--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the most recent OFAC Civil Penalties report, four out of the eight violations are Cuba related and three of those are for buying Cuban cigars over the internet. The other Cuba sanctions violation is: United Advantage Northwest Federal Credit Union, successor to Advantage Northwest Federal Credit Union, Settles Cuban Asset Control Regulations Allegations: United Advantage Federal Credit Union, successor to Advantage Northwest Federal Credit Union, Portland, OR (“Advantageâ€), has remitted $2,970 to settle allegations of violations of the Cuban Assets Control Regulations in July 2003. OFAC alleged that Advantage acted without an OFAC license by processing a funds transfer destined for Cuba. Advantage did not voluntarily disclose this matter to OFAC. Below is the OFAC language for the three Cuban cigar violations: One individual has agreed to a settlement totaling $1,087 for allegedly dealing in property in which Cuba or a Cuban national had an interest: Between March 2004 and July 2004, on multiple occasions, the individual allegedly purchased Cuban-origin cigars offered for sale on the Internet. The individual did not voluntarily disclose this matter to OFAC. One individual was assessed a penalty totaling $411.04 for allegedly dealing in property in which Cuba or a Cuban national had an interest: In 2003 and 2004, the individual allegedly purchased Cuban cigars over the Internet. A pastor's plea to change Cuba policy
Please, America, end the embargo! End the travel restrictions! End the monetary remittance restrictions! Open your hearts to our neighbors to the south, as they have been ready and willing to open theirs to us.I make this plea as a pastor who has been to Cuba 10 times since 2003. I've seen the country through the eyes of its poorest citizens, walked the tiny, unpaved back streets to visit humble Cuban homes, and slept in guano-roof huts with no indoor plumbing. In winter, I've searched the half-empty shops looking for blankets that didn't exist.Ten times I've waited hours in the Cuban airport to pass through customs. Recently, I've been asked to present my travel documents before Cuban immigration officials as they try to stem the inflow of fake pastors with black-market religious licenses.Then why do I continue to go there and count the days between trips? The primary reason is to worship with my Cuban Christian brothers and sisters in their tiny churches, where the presence of the Holy Spirit is so strong one can hardly stand. But I also continue to go because on my first trip, I fell in love with Cuba and its people. All of its people. The church folk and their families, the shopkeepers, the bicycle-taxi drivers, the doctors, the airport customs officers, and even the immigration officials. I know their names.Without exception, the Cuban people are warm and welcoming. Every customs agent who inspected my luggage was respectful and considerate. Each immigration official I've been summoned before was gracious and kind. The doctors who treated my broken wrist in a military hospital did so without hesitation, at no charge.These are a peaceful people, living in a peaceful nation. They are also a happy people, with ready smiles and home-grown humor that defies translation. Yes, they are poor and the country as a whole impoverished. But they're proud people with an air of quiet dignity. They love their country. They are proud of their country. It is their sovereign nation. They don't want any foreign nation imposing its standards of government upon them, however progressive that may seem to us.There is an old-world charm about Cuba that would be utterly destroyed by the invasion of American big business, which would quickly obliterate the pristine shoreline with high rises - for starters. Nor do Cubans on the island look forward to the anticipated flood of pre-revolution-era homeowners rushing back to reclaim land and homes that have long ago been divided and redistributed to those who remained. The people who now live on that land dread the day when wealthy Cuban Americans will return, waving desperately needed money, enticing many to relinquish their tiny homes and land for next to nothing.Demanding that Cuba change its form of government before the United States will remove the embargo, or before we will talk to their leaders, is a foolish policy. What sovereign nation would cede to those demands? What nation's leaders would willingly be stripped of their dignity in exchange for Bush's "financial incentives"?Restricting remittances and family visits to the island to curb the flow of finances into the pocket of the communist government is short-sighted. Can the American relatives of a family in Cuba not send financial help simply because the money will be spent in a state-owned store? All the stores are state-owned. Shall they go without food then? Are we trying to starve them into submission to democracy? The only ones suffering from the embargo are the poor majority on the island. And why do we not hold the same isolation policy toward communist China or North Korea?It's time to change our policy toward Cuba. It's time for our leaders to put down their politically-inherited, hard-line posturing, dispense with the arrogant, condescending rhetoric, and actually pay a visit to Cuba.As a Christian nation, claiming to serve the Prince of Peace, I believe the burden is on America to take the first step toward that long-overdue peace. We might be pleasantly surprised to discover that open communication and two-sided negotiation of the issues that concern us will accomplish what 50 years of locked doors never could.Anne E. El escritor cubano Leonardo Padura Fuentes asegura que la medida de acceso libre a internet que se espera que apruebe el gobierno de Raúl Castro puede acabar con 'el silencio, practicado con frecuencia por la prensa cubana'.Padura Fuentes hizo estas manifestaciones en una entrevista que hoy publica el semanario 'Il Venerdi', del diario La Repubblica, en la que resaltó, para explicar ese 'silencio', casos como 'el de siete jugadores de la selección de fútbol Sub 23 que pidieron asilo en EEUU y en Cuba la noticia no fue publicada, aunque la gente lo sabe'.El escritor advirtió de que todavía existen problemas técnicos para acabar con ese 'silencio', ya que, según dijo, la conexión a la red 'todavía es lenta' y los ordenadores 'no están todavía en venta para el gran público'.El presidente de Cuba, Raúl Castro, autorizó hace tres semanas la venta de ordenadores a particulares y otros aparatos eléctricos, y en la isla se espera que en el futuro se ponga fin a las restricciones que tienen los cubanos para acceder a internet.Leandro Padura Fuentes, escritor y periodista, nació en La Habana hace 53 años, es el creador del personaje literario del detective Mario Conde, y actualmente está escribiendo una novela histórica sobre León Trotsky y su asesino, Ramón Mercader.En la entrevista, Padura Fuentes se refirió también a la actitud de Estados Unidos ante las reformas cubanas en la que reconoció dos líneas de pensamiento.Una primera tendencia, la del actual presidente George W.
