Reflection by Cuban President Fidel Castro

I make a halt in my daily struggle to bow my head in respect and gratitude to the exceptional combatant who fell in combat on October 8th, forty years ago; for the example he passed on to us as leader of his Rebel Army Column, crossing the swampy grounds of the former provinces of Oriente and Camagüey, while being chased by enemy troops. He was the liberator of the city of Santa Clara and the mastermind of voluntary work; he accomplished honorable political missions abroad and served as messenger of militant internationalism in East Congo and Bolivia. He built a new awareness in our America and the world.I thank him for what he tried and failed to do in his home country, because he was like a flower prematurely severed from its stem.He left to us his unmistakable literary style. He was elegant, swift and true to every detail of whatever happened to cross his mind. He was a predestinate, but he didn't know it. He still fights with us and for us.Yesterday, we commemorated the 31st anniversary of the killing of all passengers and the crew of a Cubana airliner blown in mid-air, and we are on the threshold of the tenth anniversary of the cruel and unjust imprisonment of the five Cuban anti-terrorist heroes. We likewise bow our heads in respect to them all.It was with great emotion that I watched and heard the commemoration ceremony on TV.

Je fais une trêve dans la lutte quotidienne pour m’incliner avec respect et gratitude devant le combattant exceptionnel qui est tombé un 8 octobre, voilà quarante ans. Devant celui qui traversa à la tête de sa colonne de guérilleros les terrains marécageux au sud des anciennes provinces d’Oriente et de Camagüey, poursuivie par des forces ennemies, devant le libérateur de Santa Clara, le créateur du travail bénévole, l’acteur de brillantes missions politiques à l’étranger, le messager de l’internationalisme militant dans l’Est du Congo et en Bolivie, le semeur de conscience dans notre Amérique et dans le monde. Je le remercie de ce qu’il a tenté de faire sans y parvenir dans son pays natal, parce qu’il a été en quelque sorte une fleur arrachée prématurément de sa tige.Il nous a laissé son style bien à lui de relater, élégant, bref et vrai, chaque détail qui lui traversait l’esprit. Il était un prédestiné, mais il ne le savait pas. Il se bat avec nous et pour nous. Hier, voilà trente et un ans, un avion cubain explosait en plein vol, tuant ses passagers et son équipage, et voilà bientôt presque dix ans que nos cinq héros antiterroristes souffrent un emprisonnement cruel et injuste. J’ai vu et écouté avec beaucoup d’émotion le meeting commémoratif à la télévision.

Che s Legacy Lives on in Cuban Process
Commander of the Revolution Ramiro Valdes said on Monday that Cuba is in a moment of battle in which the example of guerrilla Ernesto Che Guevara should live.
We are in a time of battle, which should be Che s hour, said Valdes in an event, presided over by First Vice President Raul Castro, marking the 40th anniversary of Che Guevara s death in combat.
The commander said that Cuba has turned into a hotbed of ideas expressed in each work center and school since the invitation made to discuss the main problems afflicting Cuban society.
The reflections of President Fidel Castro and the words of Raul Castro in his July 26th speech have encouraged a comprehensive exchange in the heart of the Party, work places, and political, mass, youth, and student organizations, confirmed Valdes.
He considered that such discussions can contribute to a major understanding of the problems, and the mass search for solutions.
Likewise, Valdes suggested the meetings consider the capacity of the country to generate resources and the blockade on Cuba by the US, which has caused losses valued at more than $89 billion over the last 48 years.

Latin American Deputies Discuss Program on Environmental Civic Responsibility

Havana(acn) Parliament members from several Latin American countries participate in an event on environmental civic responsibility that begins on Monday in Havana under the auspices of the UN Environment Program (UNEP).According to Jose A. Cuba, Honduras Sign Maritime Treaty

Cuarenta años después de su muerte, el Che sigue siendo uno de los valores más sólidos de la revolución de Fidel Castro, y también un comodín muy útil ante las tareas difíciles, como los cambios anunciados por Raúl Castro el pasado julio. Todo ello quedó demostrado ayer en Santa Clara, la ciudad que Guevara tomó el 31 de diciembre de 1958 en un golpe militar que determinó la derrota definitiva del régimen de Fulgencio Batista.

El acto político para conmemorar la "caída en combate" del guerrillero tuvo un mensaje principal: si en los noventa el ejemplo del Che debía servir para resistir y sobrevivir al colapso del campo socialista, hoy su leyenda es convocada en apoyo a los cambios "estructurales y de concepto" que anunció Raúl Castro el pasado 26 de julio.

La plaza de la Revolución Ernesto Che Guevara, en la ciudad de Santa Clara, está presidida por una estatua de más de 20 toneladas de bronce y casi siete metros de altura. Guevara lleva fusil, uniforme, boina y la cabellera y las barbas desaliñadas, y bajo esta mole -el pedestal mide 16 metros- se encuentra el mausoleo que guarda sus restos y el de sus compañeros de guerrilla muertos en Bolivia. Allí, el presidente en funciones de Cuba, Raúl Castro, y familiares del Che encabezaron ayer un homenaje solemne con gran carga política y vocación de actualidad.

Habló Ramiro Valdés, comandante histórico y número dos de Guevara durante la lucha insurgente, hoy ministro de Informática y Comunicaciones: "Seguir el ejemplo del Che (...) significa hoy mirar hacia delante", afirmó. Valdés dedicó buena parte de sus palabras al debate que tiene hoy lugar en la isla sobre el discurso pronunciado el 26 de julio por Raúl Castro, en el que anunció la introducción de cambios económicos estructurales, así como el abandono de políticas que tuvieron sentido en el pasado, pero que hoy han sido superadas por la vida.

"Todo el país en estos días es un hervidero de ideas", dijo Valdés. "Lo que esperamos de este debate es que nos ayude a romper con la inercia, el dogmatismo y el estilo burocrático (...) a liberar donde estén trabadas las fuerzas productivas y a lograr que nos acostumbremos a revisar y actualizar críticamente las fórmulas que aplicamos en la economía y en las distintas esferas de nuestra vida".

El ministro esbozó un plan de acción: "Nuestra agenda es hacer cuanto resulte sensato y posible, eliminar lo que sea absurdo, conciliar cada logro y asegurar cada día más la plena soberanía del país, el socialismo como fundamento de la independencia y el desarrollo material". Pero advirtió que si hay una "agenda" revolucionaria, "seríamos ingenuos si no viéramos que el enemigo trata desesperadamente de introducir su propia agenda en esta discusión y en general en todo el tema cubano".El discurso de Valdés, como el de Raúl Castro en julio, era de línea, y cada palabra estaba bien sopesada: cambios sí, pero con prudencia y alerta ante quienes "de modo consciente o inconsciente" estimulan el desaliento y crean "ilusiones" de que el conflicto histórico con EE UU "puede resolverse por la vía de concepciones unilaterales o a la espera de favores".

Valdés se mostró convencido de que las "discusiones abiertas y francas" que tienen lugar en Cuba servirán para "la búsqueda colectiva de soluciones" que, dijo, "no pueden ser nunca mágicas". Calificó de "duro golpe" la enfermedad de Fidel Castro, y afirmó: "Estamos ante una hora de combate (...) no es ésta la hora de derrotismos, ni de oportunismos, ni de esperar a que venga alguien a perdonarnos la vida". Sobre Estados Unidos, parafraseó al Che: "Al imperialismo ni un tantito así". En resumen, el homenaje a Guevara confirmo que la palabra clave hoy en Cuba es cambio, pero eso sí, manteniendo el espíritu de la revolución. Una tarea complicada.

El Cuban Study Group lanza 50 millones de dólares en microcréditos para cubanos

Hispanidad.comTambién promocionan un Fondo Empresarial de 200 millones entre Estados Unidos y la UE En la mañana de este martes se celebraba en Madrid un desayuno de trabajo con Carlos Saladrigas, responsable del Cuban Study Group, uno de los principales think tanks que trabaja en la transición cubana. Saladrigas es un importante empresario de Miami, de corte pragmático, poco dado a discursos apasionados y afincado en el pragmatismo. Quizás por eso apoya el fin del embargo y un discurso de la administración americana tendente a establecer puentes de entendimientos. Sí coincide en cambio en la exigencia de libertad de presos políticos y de respeto de los derechos humanos. Y más: avala al Gobierno español que restablece la cooperación con el pueblo cubano "mientras haya un discurso firme a favor de los derechos humanos".

Pues bien. Su propuesta consiste en un microcrédito dotado de 50 millones de dólares financiado por empresas e instituciones particulares. La idea es empujar al propio cubano a que salga de la pobreza por ellos mismos. Y probablemente saldrá bien, porque como recuerda el propio Saladrigas "el mercado informal es un mercado de fuerzas competitivas". Y el cubano está acostumbrado a inventarse la existencia a diario. ¿Han hablado ya con el Gobierno cubano? "Estamos dispuestos a hablar con quienes ellos digan". O sea, que no. El proyecto ha contado de una "excelente acogida" de instituciones financieras españolas y del mismo Gobierno. "Nos hemos reunido con miembros de la Cancillería y la recepción ha sido muy buena". ¿Con la oposición? "También; nosotros no somos como el régimen que persigue a la oposición".

Además, el Cuban Study Group quiere promocionar un fondo empresarial de 200 millones de dólares para promover el desarrollo empresarial. Se trataría de emular el modelo seguido en las repúblicas ex soviéticas con fondos públicos. Y la idea de Saladrigas es que el fondo de 200 millones se aportado a partes iguales entre Estados Unidos y la UE. ¿Modelo chino? "El problema es que en Cuba no hay chinos", responde a la gallega. "Lo importante es que los cambios comiencen ya", concluye.

"When I go there, I feel so well. He asked his Cuban-American host family if they were Christians because he couldn't think of another reason why they would try so hard to help his son.The connection between Ukrainians and Cuban-Americans is understandable, said Taras Tkachuk, 30, a Ukrainian doctor who works with Kateryna Yushchenko's charity, Ukraine 3000 Fund, which helped sponsor the group along with Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics in Orlando."It's difficult to have a democracy after totalitarianism.
