Washington Bans Medicine Exports to Havana's Hospital

(acn) United States' Treasury Department has banned the export of medicines or devices made by US companies to Havana's William Soler Pediatric Hospital, opened 21 years ago by Fidel Castro primarily to treat children with congenital heart malformations.The first sign of the recently stepped up measure to block the sale to Cuba came with the ban on sales of catheters and other devices by AGA and NUMED companies to the pediatric hospital's Cardiocenter, used by specialists to perform the technique known as interventionist catheterization.This advanced minimally invasive procedure is practiced with very good results at the Cardiocenter to close gaps between heart cavities and in the dilation of narrow heart valves among other problems. The treatment prevents patients from having to undergo "open heart" surgery, reports Granma newspaper.Sources from the Ministry of Public Health note that since 2006 the US Department of Commerce began to list Cuba's most important hospitals as blacklisted facilities, in a new attempt to strangle the development of medical attention on the island."This is not a political problem," said cardiovascular surgeon Dr. Eugenio Selman-Housein Sosa, director of the "William Soler" Cardiocenter, "but an ethical humane and moral one," which in his opinion speaks poorly of the US government.The specialist pointed out that since the end of 2006; changes within the license mechanisms established by the US Treasury Department have been taking place to prevent the purchase of sets of instruments, equipment and medicines by his medical institution.In it's more than two decades of existence the "William Soler" Cardiocenter, of the National Cardio-pediatric Network set up under the Ministry of Public Health's Mother-Child Program, has made it possible to achieve a 75% drop in the child mortality rate due to heart ailments. This has led to the incorporation of hundreds of children to normal life, many of whom are now adults.More than 6,500 heart surgeries have been performed at the center since 1986 including operations on newborns, 60% of which have been carried out with the "open heart" technique.The prestigious pediatric institution shows internationally acknowledged achievements in the treatment of congenital cardiovascular anomalies and also in the introduction of new diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitation techniques. A fruit of these efforts are the many scientific, teaching and research papers presented by its specialists at national and international congresses and events.It's no wonder then that Washington systematically denies visas to the center's professionals to attend scientific meetings in the US, citing the time worn pretext that "their entry could be detrimental to US Interests."Such is the case of two outstanding scientists from the "William Soler", professors Herminia Palenzuela Lopez, a specialist in Cardiopediatrics, and the center's medical deputy director, and Dunia Benítez Ramos, a specialist in charge of cardiovascular intensive care for children.The two specialists maintain that the prohibitions on Cubans attending international conferences held in the US are "immoral" and "anti-ethical." These exchanges are essential to all specialists, and especially to those devoted to cardiology and pediatric cardiac surgery, which requires systematic updating and training, stressed Dr. Palenzuela.Evidently, in a highly sensitive issue such as this one, the blacklisted hospitals and prohibition on visas for physicians are part of the US government's web of criminal actions taken under the dark cloak of its seemingly endless blockade against Cuba.

Fidel Castro Says World Economic Crisis is at the Door

(acn) Cuban President Fidel Castro appeared Friday in a video broadcast by Cuban television, where he warned of a serious world economic crisis and addressed different issues. He also dealt with his most recent reflections published by Cuban and international media outlets. The video was shown during the prime time TV show "The Round Table Discussion", moderated by journalist and host Randy Alonso. Fidel Castro made a deep analysis of his reflections published under the title "Deliberate Lies, Strange Deaths and Aggression against World Economy." In his written piece the leader of the Cuban Revolution quoted writings by former US President Ronald Reagan, former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and former US National Security official Gus Weis, and other sources, which expose certain actions by the United States that contributed to the fall of the former Soviet Union. President Castro warned that at present the US administration is making use of unimaginable economic resources to violate the sovereignty of other countries by continuing to buy with paper bills raw materials, the energy and advanced technology, and the most productive lands on our planet. In the video, Fidel Castro warned that the skyrocketing oil prices could continue to increase and in reference to US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, he said she is promoting a program to protect some 50 million US citizens who have no social security. But he asked, "How will they fund that program?" and he answered: "only with bills that have no support, with which they want to buy the world." The Cuban Revolution leader accused Washington of having unleashed a war of religions and of brain drain. During the TV show, Doctor Osvaldo Martinez, director of the Institute for Research on the World Economy described as accurate the phrase used by Fidel Castro when he said that the world is "threatened by a deep economic crisis." The Cuban expert illustrated the world situation by referring to the financial speculative bubble, which was replaced by another similar one in the real estate sector. He said that the US dollar is currently changing at 60 cents of an Euro, which represents a lack of confidence in the US economy, and he also recalled the high oil prices (over 84 dollars to the barrel), while he also predicted that the world is living the first chapter of a huge depression. "We are in the presence of a very particular situation, in which the huge speculative machine, fueled by neo-liberal policy, no longer provides real economy, with a production of goods and services that can no longer make it sustainable and it is falling apart," said Martinez. He said that the first thing to fall down is the artificial US economy, whose dollar has no real support, with a massive deficit, a huge accumulated debt both personal, governmental and private. Other journalists who participated in the show agreed that the analysis made by the Cuban leader was very profound and far-reaching and they said that the world must find solutions to get out of the crisis provoked by neo-liberalism and the ambitions of the US administration.

CANCILLER CUBANO DICE QUE ALBA HA TENIDO UN TRABAJO "FECUNDO E INTENSO"

POR FRANCISCO FORTEZA(WORLD DATA SERVICE).- Al inaugurar aquí una conferencia del ALBA, un programa integracionista basado en la solidaridad, el canciller cubano, Felipe Pérez Roque, dijo que desde su fundación en 2004 en La Habana por los presidentes venezolano, Hugo Chávez, y cubano, Fidel Castro, esa entidad ha tenido "tres años de trabajo fecundo, intenso". En un discurso en el Palacio de las Convenciones ante representantes de los países miembros de la Alternativa Bolivariana Para las Américas (ALBA) -Cuba, Bolivia, Nicaragua y Venezuela- el ministro dijo que este encuentro iniciado el jueves deberá analizar los proyectos que se desarrollan en ese contexto y continuar negociaciones acerca de un Banco del ALBA. La reunión también busca continuar un llamado proceso de institucionalización y establecer calendarios para sus próximas citas. "Hay ya realizaciones indiscutibles" para el órgano integracionista, que fue fundado a propuestas de Chávez como un mecanismo destinado a combatir procesos de libre comercio impulsados por Estados Unidos en América Latina. Pérez Roque agregó que los éxitos se han obtenido en los terrenos social, económico y energético. De acuerdo con sus palabras la integración es para América Latina y el Caribe "el camino para la solución de los problemas que enfrentan". "Entendemos que ningún país solo puede en el mundo de hoy hacer frente a los enormes retos", agregó. Profundizando en la agenda del encuentro, dijo que esta propiciará "una actualización de los proyectos gran nacionales que fueron aprobados en la Cumbre de Barquisimeto (Venezuela)" para determinar los proyectos prioritarios "que recibirán un impulso preferencial". También será examinado un proceso de "nueva estructura permanente para dar seguimiento a las múltiples iniciativas, programas que están en proceso de ejecución", con el estudio de una propuesta para la creación de una "coordinadora permanente". "Más de dos millones y medio de personas han sido alfabetizados, y más de 800 000 fueron operados de la vista" en el contexto del ALBA, afirmó. También fueron formados de manera gratuita más de 45 mil médicos de toda Latinoamérica y en especial de los países miembros del ALBA.

La Alternativa Bolivariana para las Américas (ALBA) da sus primeros pasos y se vislumbra un camino largo, pero estimulante para los países integrantes del grupo, afirmó la víspera Carlos Lage Dávila, secretario del Comité Ejecutivo del Consejo de Ministros durante la sesión de clausura de la II Reunión de Ministros del organismo.
Dijo Lage que el ALBA surgió para promover la integración de las naciones, no de los mercados, "para poner en primer lugar nuestros pueblos, al ser humano, no a las cifras de desarrollo económico" y consideró que otros proyectos de integración del área fracasaron porque no lograron escapar de "la larga y oscura noche neoliberal vivida en la región".
Apuntó asimismo que el ALBA debe romper dogmas capitalistas y estar presidido por la solidaridad, apartándose de conceptos egoístas de chovinismo y nacionalismo.
El encuentro acordó impulsar seis nuevos proyectos "grannacionales", así como la creación de una secretaría permanente de ese mecanismo, precisa PL.
Se comprometen igualmente, a crear una empresa comercializadora y distribuidora de productos farmacéuticos; fundar un centro de vigilancia epidemiológica para el ALBA, y gestionar el manejo integral de cuencas, acceso al agua y saneamiento para todos los habitantes de esos países. También cuentan entre los nuevos proyectos la creación de un instituto "grannacional" del ambiente y la universidad del ALBA.
Los cancilleres Felipe Pérez Roque (Cuba), Nicolás Maduro (Venezuela) y David Choquehuanca (Bolivia), así como el ministro presidente del Fondo Social de Emergencia de Nicaragua, Nelson Artola, presidieron las delegaciones de sus respectivas naciones.
Los ministros acordaron también instaurar una Coordinadora permanente del ALBA en Caracas, Venezuela, y dejaron fijada la reunión cumbre del organismo para el próximo 20 de diciembre en Managua, Nicaragua.
