National Committee To Free The Cuban Five Bulletin
URGENT: www.freethefive.org website unavailable Sometime during the morning of August 20, just as the appeals hearings were about to begin in Atlanta, the website of the National Committee to Free the Cuban Five at www.freethefive.org was taken offline by our web hosting service. As of this moment, we don't know why they did this, but we are working around the clock attempting to restore the availability of the website. Needless to say this greatly hampers our ability to report on today's appeals hearings. We hope to send out another listserve message tomorrow with an update on the hearings. When you attempt to visit the website, if you get "site unavailable" or similar messages, you'll know the problem still exists. Once the site is back up, we expect it will not be a "full" site - we'll probably need to restore it one piece at a time, starting with the most important things, including audio recordings of the speeches given at the reception Sunday night and at Monday's press conference following the hearing. We're sure you share our chagrin that this happened at this critical time, and we're also sure you'll be patient as we attempt to fix the problem.
Please do not attempt to send any email to any freethefive.org address in the next few days either, as it will not go through. We apologize for the inconvenience. We had posted a half-dozen articles on the site within the last two days, all of them very interesting. Since the site isn't up, we're posting direct links to those articles below so you can read them at their original source. Most are articles about the hearing, written before the hearing, but one, the article from the Atlanta Progressive News, features the reception held by the Committee for visiting guests on Sunday night.

Comisión Parlamentaria examinará temas de interés naciona

La Comisión Permanente de Atención a la Actividad Productiva de la Asamblea Nacional del Poder Popular examinará importantes temas de interés nacional, entre estos la alimentación animal y acopio de la leche, con vistas a su reunión de diciembre próximo.
Leonardo Martínez López y Gerardo Hernández Suárez, presidente y secretario, respectivamente, de ese grupo de trabajo, en su encuentro habitual con la prensa, dijeron que revisarán la política estatal de alimentación animal con el ánimo de verificar la posibilidad de la sustitución de importaciones en esta esfera.
Precisaron que se quiere incrementar el suministro nutriente de procedencia nacional como la utilización de mieles y otros insumos obtenidos localmente para mantener vitales programas, entre ellos el porcino, avícola, ovino-caprino y la ganadería vacuna.
Ante los actuales altos precios de productos de nutrición animal como el maíz, y el sorgo, debido a la nefasta moda de los biocombustibles, es aconsejable fomentar su sustitución y acudir a todas las posibilidades que brindan en este sentido los desechos de la industria molinera, láctea, citrícola, la fabricación de torúla y otras fuentes, señalaron.
Indicaron que se revisará el acopio y procesamiento de la leche, a partir de las experiencias puestas en marcha en varias regiones del territorio nacional y, en particular, cómo ha repercutido el alza del precio a los productores individuales en los niveles de calidad y aumento de la producción láctea y de carne.
También destacaron que ese grupo de trabajo centrará su atención en urgentes asuntos tales como la situación del programa de viviendas, recursos hidráulicos y alcantarillado; además de la contribución del Ministerio de la Industria Pesquera a la Caja Central del Estado y la responsabilidad de ese sector en la alimentación de la población.
La Comisión para la Atención a la Actividad Productiva auxilia al
Parlamento y al Consejo de Estado en la fiscalización de disímiles
sectores de la vida nacional, entre estos la producción de alimentos,
las construcciones, la pesca, la actividad azucarera, el uso y fomento
de los recursos hidráulicos, la fabricación de medicamentos,
vestimentas y calzado.
