Cuban Parliament Adopts Declaration Supporting Cause of Cuban Five

HAVANA, Cuba, July 11 (acn) Cuban lawmakers today adopted a declaration supporting the cause of the five anti-terrorist fighters held in US jails, during the First Session of the Cuban Parliament’s 7th legislature, underway at Havana’s Convention Center with the presence of President Raul Castro Ruz.

The declaration was presented by Parliament president Ricardo Alarcon, who called on all lawmakers around the world to join the declaration and the accords adopted at the Latin American and Caribbean Parliamentary Encounter, held in Panama last July 7 and 8.

Alarcon reiterated the need to multiply world solidarity in favor of the cause of Ramon Labañino, Gerardo Herñandez, Rene Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando Gonzalez, known as the Cuban Five, and to keep on with the struggle until justice is finally made.

The US Administration’s backdrop against the Five is countered by this Draft Declaration, which was approved unanimously, he said.

The document presented to the plenary session recalls the unfair process to which the Cuban Five have been submitted for nearly 10 years now; they were accused of having acted against the US national security.

On August 9 2005 a three-judge panel at Atlanta´s Court of Appeals unanimously revoked the sentences and ordered a new trial for the Five, since the panel considered that the city of Miami was not an appropriate place to judge the five men, the declaration recalls.

It looked like the US judicial system would finally make justice in the long process full with arbitrariness and manipulations, but a year later the full court, in an unprecedented verdict in US judicial history, revoked the decision of the three-judge panel and affirmed the Miami trial; they sent the case back to the panel after considering the rest of issues challenged by the defense.

After 22 months, the panel rejected almost all appealing arguments by alleging that they lack merit and upheld the guiltiness verdicts against the Cuban Five, and two prison terms, in the case of Rene Gonzalez (15 years) and two life terms plus 15 years in the case of Gerardo Hernandez.

It is interesting to note that the decision was made in the context of the current electoral process in the United States and when the US administration intensifies maneuvers to provide permanent protection to confessed terrorist Luis Posada Carriles, by rejecting his extradition to Venezuela.

All the process, said Ricardo Alarcon, is but one more action against Cuba and against its people; it is not only about an economic war, but also about a campaign of lies in virtue of a dirty war against terror led by the US government. The declaration adopted by the Cuban Parliament was passed with all 569 lawmakers in favor, who represent 92, 82 percent of attendance.

Urge Washington to grant U.S. entry visas to Adriana, and to Olga Salanueva, wife of René González
Dear Friends of the Cuban Five: For more than ten years, Adriana and Gerardo have not been able to see each other. Olga and René have also been denied the right to family visits, since August 2000. This is due to the cruel and unjustified refusal by the U.S. government to grant entry visas to the wives of two of the Cuban Five. It is a basic human and constitutional right for spouses and their children to be together, but the U.S. government has blatantly violated those rights. Other family members of the Cuban Five have been forced to wait as long as 26 months before being allowed to enter the United States to see their loved ones. Take Action Today! Please take a moment to help out. As part of the worldwide campaign for the wives' visas, The National Committee to Free the Cuban Five has developed an on-line feature, so you can easily send a letter from anywhere in the world, to U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey. http://www.freethefive.org/wivesemail.htm,

Bauer's Film on Che Lauded in Cuba
Havana, Jul 11 (Prensa Latina) The chairman of the Havana Film Festival, Alfredo Guevara, called Argentinean director Tristan Bauer's film on Ernesto Che Guevara a definite work.According to him, its greatest value lies on portraying a complex and fascinating, faithful to the truth, image of Che, .The film is almost complete, he said at a press conference held in Havana.Alfredo Guevara said he rejects all approaches to the legendary Argentinean-Cuban guerrilla fighter that would make concessions to the market or distort passages and events related to Che's life.He added that he had not seen Steven Soderbergh's film, screened at the last Cannes Festival in France, so he could not comment on it.I met Che personally, he pointed out. He was a guerrilla fighter in combat, the one from Sierra Maestra, from Bolivia, from Africa, and an ideological guerrilla fighter as well, he added.
