Cuba Will Not Tolerate Provocations by U.S. Interests Section in Havana
-- (RHC)-- The Cuban Foreign Ministry has denounced in an official note that escalations of provocative actions have taken place on the island in recent weeks, organized and financed by the U.S. Interests Section in Havana. The U.S. Interests Section, which is at the forefront of Washington’s subversive policy and domestic counterrevolutionar ies, has increased its interventionist and illegal activities in our country despite the Cuban government’s reiterated denunciations. The Cuban government reiterates that it will not tolerate the continuation of these provocations and illegal actions instigated by the U.S. administration through its diplomatic officials in Havana and places the responsibility on the U.S. for its consequences, according to the official note. The most recent actions encouraged and coordinated directly by the U.S. Interests Section in Havana are as follows: * The organization of an activity on Father's Day at the residence of the head of the U.S. Interests Section, an event during which the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Cuban-American Carlos Gutierrez, co-president of the Commission in charge of the application of the Bush Plan against Cuba, addressed a group of counterrevolutionar ies by way of a video conference. * Several training courses held at the U.S. Interests Section for counterrevolutionar ies -- who call themselves “journalists”-- offered via video conferences by professors of the International University of Florida based in Miami, which receives official financing from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), specifically for this program. * The personalized attention given to the heads of counterrevolutionar y groups inside the country by U.S. diplomatic personnel including the head of the U.S. Interests Section, who visits the mercenaries in their own homes and contacts them in a semi-clandestine manner to give them instructions. * The transference of direct instructions from U.S. diplomatic personnel at the Interests Section to the mercenaries, aimed at increasing their subversive actions, inciting them to carry out provocative actions in public and at symbolic places like Revolution Square. * The authorization for mercenaries to use facilities in the Interests Section like permanent Internet access and the constant supply of money, cell phones, communications, computers and counterrevolutionar y propaganda, among others. The Cuban Foreign Ministry has confirmed information that the U.S. Interests Section in Havana is organizing other illegal activities and is instigating its mercenaries in Cuba to carry out provocative public actions around the date of July 4th, Independence Day in the United States. These activities will also coincide with the end of the current representation mission in Cuba and the definitive departure of Mr. Michael Parmly, Head of the U.S. Interests Section in Havana, whose scandalous and illicit activities were denounced during the month of May by the Cuban government after evidence was revealed about his direct connection and participation, alongside other U.S. diplomats, in transferring money from Cuban-born terrorist Santiago Alvarez Fernandez-Magriñ a to counterrevolutionar ies in Cuba. This escalation constitutes the most recent demonstration of the U.S. administration’s desperation which, having failed in its isolation policy against Cuba, intensifies its provocations and subversion. The Cuban Foreign Ministry once again denounces the illegal activities of the U.S. Interests Section in Havana, which flagrantly violates not only the bilateral accord between both countries that established that office, but also Cuban laws and international norms ratified in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961, of which the U.S. is a signatory. The Foreign Ministry accuses the U.S. government of organizing and promoting these activities and other counterrevolutionar y provocations, which is an intrinsic part of its subversive policy and its direct strategy of destroying the Cuban Revolution. Cuba demands that the U.S. government respond to these actions and demands an end to the interventionist activities of encouragement, organization, direction, financing and monitoring of domestic counterrevolutionar ies by the U.S. Interests Section. The Cuban government clearly reiterates that it will not tolerate the continuation of these provocations and illegal actions, instigated by the U.S. administration through its diplomatic officials in Havana.

Havana, Jul 3 (PL) - Cuban social and economic development will be tackled by the island's Parliament in the first session of the present legislature, slated for next week.The aim is to systematize and expand links with voters according to the interest of supporting deputies, to review the main programs implemented in the country.According to a report by Granma newspaper, the country will approve the 12 permanent working commissions of the legislative and 85 parliamentary groups of solidarity, as well as learn the work of several organizations and ministries.Before the plenary session, slated for July 11, participants will discuss specific questions of the national occurrences like problems that affect saving and energy efficiency in the island.Also on the list are to solve difficulties in water supply, the production of food, the construction of houses, the coming school year, results of the mother-child program, dentistry services, regulated distribution of food, foreign investment perspectives and general evolution of economy.The analysis of the commercialization of agricultural products and results of the 2007-2008 sugarcane harvest will be also analyzed in this meeting.

Comisiones permanentes sesionarán a partir del lunes Desde su primer periodo ordinario de sesiones en la actual legislatura, la Asamblea Nacional del Poder Popular dejará sentadas nuevas indicaciones para sistematizar y ampliar el vínculo de los diputados con los electores.El tema —inscrito en el proyecto de orden del día de la venidera reunión, fijada para el 11 de julio—, resulta consecuente con el interés que manifestó nuestro pueblo durante el proceso electoral, cuando acudió masivamente a los encuentros con los candidatos y los respaldó luego en las urnas. Miriam Brito, secretaria de la Asamblea, confirmó que la agenda prevista incluye, además, la aprobación de las 12 comisiones permanentes de trabajo constituidas con carácter provisional desde el pasado mes de mayo, y de 85 grupos parlamentarios de amistad. También tendrán lugar la rendición de cuentas del Ministerio de la Industria Sidero Mecánica y la presentación de un anteproyecto de ley sobre la seguridad social. Con antelación (7 y 8 de julio), se reunirán todas las comisiones por separado para discutir cuestiones específicas de la vida económica y social del país que son objeto de su atención. Según dijo la diputada, la Comisión de Energía y Medio Ambiente discutirá, entre otras cuestiones, los problemas que afectan el ahorro y la eficiencia energética en el país. El comportamiento de las inversiones para solucionar dificultades en el abasto de agua, la producción nacional de medicamentos y el programa de viviendas, serán puntos a tratar en la Comisión de Atención a la Industria y las Construcciones. En tanto, Atención a la Juventud, la Niñez y la Igualdad de Derechos de la Mujer sopesará el desarrollo del curso escolar.Resultados del programa materno infantil y situación de la atención estomatológica en los servicios de prótesis, figuran entre los temas seleccionados por el equipo de Salud y Deporte. Para la Comisión de Atención a los Servicios serán aspectos fundamentales la distribución normada de alimentos y la reparación de los equipos electrodomésticos entregados a la población.Órganos Locales propiciará, entre otros objetivos, el intercambio de experiencias acerca del control y la fiscalización por parte de los Consejos Populares. Asuntos Económicos verá actualidad y perspectivas de la inversión extranjera, evolución general de la economía y ejecución del Presupuesto del Estado en el 2008, explicó la dirigente.En la Comisión Agroalimentaria colocarán sobre el tapete asuntos tales como la comercialización de productos agropecuarios, los resultados de la zafra azucarera 2007-2008 y las perspectivas para la próxima. Educación, Cultura, Ciencia y Tecnología, informó, evaluará la conservación y el mantenimiento de las obras nuevas y reconstruidas para esos sectores como parte de la Batalla de Ideas. Según indicó la Secretaria, durante los días 9 y 10 de julio los diputados recibirán información sobre la gestión de los ministerios de la Construcción, industrias Básica y Ligera y de Trabajo y Seguridad Social.

As always, the Pastors for Peace buses are carrying medicines and other materials to show their solidarity with the people of Cuba. Rev. Thomas Smith, President of the Board of Directors for the Interreligious Foundation for Community Organization/Pastors for Peace, told ANSWER, "We've had 31 computers seized by the Customs and Border Patrol at the U.S.-Mexico border. These computers were destined for classrooms, clinic and hospitals in Cuba. These are 31 classrooms, clinics and hospitals that now will not have the opportunity to have computers." Smith vowed to "maintain a demonstration until we get the computers back"

Fidel Castro says FARC wrong to take hostages
(AFP) HAVANA - Former Cuban president Fidel Castro praised Thursday the Colombian army's rescue of Ingrid Betancourt and 14 other hostages from Marxist FARC rebels and said they should never have been held.‘Civilians should never have been abducted, nor soldiers held as prisoners under jungle conditions,’ the veteran Communist leader said, describing the detention as ‘cruel’ and that ‘no revolutionary purpose could justify it.’Castro, who led Cuba's revolution in 1959, said French-Colombian politician Betancourt was ‘weakened and sick’ and the other hostages -- three US defense contractors and 11 Colombian soldiers -- were in an ‘unstable’ condition.‘For basic humanitarian reasons, we welcome the news that Ingrid Betancourt, three US citizens and other hostages were freed,’ he said in a statement on the official Cubadebate website.

En doce años Cuba tendría más ancianos que niños
LA HABANA (ACI).- Expertos de la Oficina Nacional de Estadísticas y del Centro Iberoamericano para la Tercera Edad informaron desde esta capital que Cuba cuenta con una de las poblaciones más envejecidas de América Latina y en el año 2020 tendrá más ancianos que niños.La agencia oficial Prensa Latina citó a los expertos de estos organismos, según los cuales "se estima que por primera vez en el 2020 habrá más ancianos que niños en Cuba".En 1985, el 11,3 por ciento de la población superaba los 60 años. Al cierre de 2007, ese grupo de edad llegó a 16,6 por ciento.Según las proyecciones, la Isla puede llegar en dos o tres décadas a ser el país latinoamericano con la población de mayor edad y se estima que su esperanza de vida será de 78 años.La División de Población de las Naciones Unidas ha señalado a Barbados y Cuba como los países mas envejecidos de América Latina y el Caribe a corto plazo.
UN Experts Praise Cuba's Efforts to Universalize Education
HAVANA, Cuba, July 3 (acn) Authorities from the United Nations Organization for Education, Science, and Culture (UNESCO), praised in Havana the Cuban program to universalize education. In statements published by Bohemia magazine, Dr. Ana Lucía Gazzola, director of UNESCO's International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean (IESALC), said that this plan is of upmost importance. The UN official pointed out that other countries should follow Cuba's footsteps in this regard, in order to assure the access of all young people to higher education. "The Cuban university is a consolidated university, which maintains exchanges with other centers for higher studies from around the world, whether to share its experiences or to receive them from others", indicated Gazzola. "Cuba has always been an ally of UNESCO and of its International Institute for Higher Education in Latin America and the Caribbean," she stressed. Gazzola made reference to the need for consolidating and expanding that large higher education network, in order to advance with the advantages of a bloc in today's world. Moreover, the head of UNESCO's Higher Education Division, Dr. George Haddad, considered this university model interesting, and he was confident that in a few years, sooner than later, it will be an example that will bear fruit. The two UN officials were on a visit to Cuba recently.

The Brazilian and Cuban state oil companies, Petrobras and CUPET, are ontrack to sign an oil exploration deal this year, according to Dow Jones.Fidel Rivero, president of CUPET, is quoted by the Estado, a localnewspaper, as saying "we are in the concluding phase of a deal. We hope toannounce something in coming months".Significanc e: Cuba has around 240million barrels of proved oil reserves and around 1 tcf of natural gas inits offshore waters in the Gulf of Mexico, and potential oil resources havebeen estimated by some as between 4 billion and 9 billion barrels.Unsurprisingly, several companies have been hovering, some more tentativelythan others, around the island in anticipation of being allowed to explorethe region. While American companies are barred from participating inactivities in Cuba as a result of a U.S. embargo on the island, Europeanfirms as well as those from Russia and China have been keen to engage indiscussions with CUPET where possible.Petrobras's significant experience in deepwater drilling is an obvious assetthat Cuba would like more exposure to, so some sort of eventual deal will belikely to include provision for technology transfer. In return, Petrobrascould very well find itself being able to explore some of the more promisingblocks, while also being allowing to build a petrochemicals refinery on theisland.
