We Will Recover Everything We Had, Says Raul Castro
HAVANA, Cuba, Sept 19 (acn) Cuban President Raul Castro said peopleshould feel the need to work more. He was speaking in a meeting with local residents of the municipality of La Palma, Pinar del Rio, one of the areas most affected by hurricanes Gustav and Ike. He assured those inattendance that they will recover everything they had. After meeting with civil defense authorities on the Isla de la Juventud,44 miles off Cuba's southern coast, and in the western province of Pinardel Rio, the Cuban president spoke with the residents of the two areas, who expressed their confidence in the government and the Revolution. In speaking with farmers in Pinar del Rio, Castro talked about theimportance of gradually eliminating the double currency in Cuba andpaying workers for what they do as a way to boost production. “It would be bold to say that in a period of four to five years wecould eliminate the double currency and make salaries decent, but it has to be done... people have to be paid according to what they produce," said the Cuban president. He emphasized that equalitarianism, where everyone is paid about the same, should not be mistaken for equality, whereby everybody has the same opportunities. "If you work more than me and you sacrifice more than I do, you shouldreceive more than me," said Raul, pointing at one of the farmers. In relation to the recovery efforts underway across the island,President Castro said there will be 15 brigades in each province tosupport agricultural work, including a brigade on the Isla de laJuventud, which will be created as soon as they have the necessaryagricultural machines. Another 70 brigades of construction workers will also be created, twofor each of the municipalities hard-hit by the hurricanes. The brigadeswill be expected to build an average of 100 houses per year. The Cuban president stressed that the brigades will not be createdimmediately, since the equipment needed has to first be bought fromabroad.
