Gustav Leaves No Deaths in Cuba
HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 31(acn) Even though hurricane Gustav was one of themost devastating to hit Cuba in the last 50 years, it did not cause anydeaths due to the exceptional civil defense measures taken.Reporting live on the nationally televised Round Table program Sundayevening, Col. Miguel Angel Puig, operations chief of the Civil DefenseCouncil, said there were no casualties during the passing of hurricaneGustav that battered the municipality of the Isle of Youth and Pinar delRio province. Nineteen people with minor injuries were reported, said the official. Speaking by telephone to the program, Pinar del Rio's Civil DefenseCoordinator Olga Lidia Tapia said more than 80 high tension towers werebrought down by the winds, as well as three television and radiotransmission towers. An estimated 86,000 homes and 372 schools were partially or totallydamaged by the hurricane. Among the major agricultural losses were nearly 3,500 tobacco dryingbarns that collapsed and 63 poultry houses. On the Isle of Youth the electricity system was totally devastated and a large number of schools suffered severe damage both in their infrastructure, as well as to teaching aids and supplies, said Ana Isa Delagado in statements via telephone broadcasted on the TV program.
Havana Returning to Normality After Hurricane Gustav
HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 31(acn) Social and economic activities are being resumed in the Cuban capital, which suffered minimal damage by the passing of hurricane Gustav that swept the Isle of Youth and the western province of Pinar del Rio. Up to early Sunday morning, partial damage to 19 houses, and tree and branches blocking some streets in the city were reported. A few electric and telephone lines were also affected. Water, gas and transport services will be gradually restored in Havana City during the day, while brigades specializing in emergency situations,and the people in general, are working on the cleaning up of the city. Many of the 93,300 people evacuated in the territory are safe to return home after authorities evaluated the outcome of Gustav. Tourists staying in hotels located in low areas of Havana, who were evacuated are also being sent back to those facilities, said Ramon Zamora, Ministry of Tourism representative in Havana City.
