Havana, Sep 10 (Prensa Latina) Cubans awoke today engaged in a gigantic battle to overcome damages caused by hurricane Ike, which left the island yesterday. The storm took a heavy toll on services and the economy in a dangerous trail that started last Sunday in the eastern city of Holguin and finished in western Pinar del Rio.Strong rains and wind caused flooding and collapsed buildings in a horrific path that first grounded in the northeast, strafed the land to the southwest then dipped into the Atlantic and bordered the southern coast. On Tuesday Ike finally sliced up through Cuba again to the Gulf of Mexico, through western Pinar del Rio.That area was still recovering from hurricane Gustav, which had hit eight days earlier.President Raul Castro and other governmental leaders directed measures to save lives and property, and multiple recovery operations are underway. The westernmost city of Cuba, Baracoa, started receiving resources only 24 hours after the hurricane left. The Revolutionary Armed Forces, social, political and governmental organizations play an integral role in quickly returning Cuba to normality.

Cuba Slams World Famine Response
Geneva, Sep 10 (Prensa Latina) Cuba on Wednesday slammed as hypocritical the position certain countries have adopted regarding the challenge posed by current food crisis and world famine.Addressing the ninth session of the UN Human Rights Council, Cuban Ambassador to the Geneva-based UN bodies, Juan Antonio Fernandez, said such issues are of the utmost importance for tens of million people.Fernandez called a paradox the fact that countries dooming other nations to starvation are now responsible for offering real solutions to the problem.Political will is needed to contribute 0.7 percent of the rich-country GNP to development aid, and to turn the current one-billion dollar world war budget into a world food budget, he said.According to the Cuban diplomat, political will is also needed to invest in agriculture and resources, and stop food price speculation, which is the same, he noted, as speculating with the lives of million of people.Fernandez claimed that the world food crisis and its impact on the right to food were timely discussed at the UN Human Rights Council. He also praised efforts developed by Olivier De Schutter, United Nations´ special rapporteur on the right to food.It is just bold hypocrisy trying to justify the current food crisis with an alleged demography increase in certain countries, the Cuban diplomat said.In his opinion, the unfair and unequal distribution of wealth and the unsustainable neoliberal economic model are responsible for the current food crisis and world famine.
