Sin afectación a turistas en Cuba pese al huracán Ike

Autoridades cubanas del Sistema de Turismo reportan que no son significativas las averías en sus dependencias por el azote del huracán Ike, y que tampoco los vacacionistas han presentado problemas.Carlos de los Cuetos, jefe de Defensa del Ministerio del Turismo (MINTUR), declaró a la AIN que en toda la geografía de la Isla varios hoteles han sufrido ligeras afectaciones en las marqueterías, cercas perimetrales y desprendimientos de vidrios de las ventanas, entre otras.Explicó que la primera tarea del MINTUR ante los embates del huracán que entró por la provincia de Holguín con categoría cuatro, y actualmente posee la categoría uno, fue implementar medidas para reubicar a la totalidad de los turistas nacionales y extranjeros.De los Cuetos informó que de ellos, solamente el cinco por ciento fueron trasladados a lugares más seguros; y absolutamente todos -incluidos los campistas- han sido resguardados y ninguno ha recibido ni un rasguño, aseguró.Por otra parte un representante del Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores precisó que tras recorridos de comprobación, ningún personal diplomático, ni becarios extranjeros han presentado problemas por las secuelas del evento meteorológico.Además, comunicó que los más de 600 cooperantes cubanos en Haití gozan de perfecta salud, y que el 75 por ciento de ellos en su condición de médicos y paramédicos, brindan atención sanitaria a los evacuados de esa nación antillana.

Dear Mr. President: I am writing to add my voice to that of the Chairman of the Committee on =0 AForeign Affairs, Howard Berman, calling for a suspension of regulatory restrictions for travel and remittances to Cuba by Cuban-Americans. Lifting these restrictions will help to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Cuba caused by the recent hurricanes. First, Hurricane Gustav damaged homes, infrastructure and crops across the island. Now, Hurricane Ike has caused the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of people in Cuba and will add to the damage to buildings and agriculture. Because of this repeated battering, I agree with Chairman Berman that we should examine all possible avenues for providing assistance to Cuba. As a government we should reach out and offer assistance to the Cuban people, but one of our best resources for providing timely and accurate assistance is the many Cuban-Americans with families back in Cuba. They personally understand the situation in Cuba and will know what their families need. In order to tap this great resource, I believe that Chairman Berman’s proposal of a 90 day suspension of regulatory restrictions on visits, remittances and gifts is reasonable and would allow Cuban Americans to help their relatives recover from the storms. This is not a time to focus on policy differences over the merits of the Cuban government, nor on the long term differences between our two governments. It is a time to acknowledge the human suffering and hardship that is ongoing in Cuba and to take steps to all eviate it. This is an opportunity for our nation to show its compassion for those who are suffering. I encourage you to take the necessary measures to allow direct assistance to the Cuban people from their family members in the United States.

U.S. repeating offer to help Cuba after hurricanes
From CNN’s Charley Keyes - WASHINGTON (CNN) — The United States is repeating its offer to help Cuba in the wake of hurricanes Gustav and Ike and also is easing restrictions on private assistance, according to the State Department.After Gustav struck the island nation, the U.S. provided $100,000 in emergency aid to Cuba to be channeled through private aid agencies. And a fact sheet released by the State Department Tuesday said the U.S. is “considering additional emergency aid in response to Ike.”Also, the United States says it will lift restrictions on cash and humanitarian assistance sent to Cuba for the next 90 days. That will allow non-governmental organizations to provide humanitarian assistance and cash donations.

Russia denies plans to reopen Cuba radar
MOSCOW, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- The Kremlin Tuesday dismissed the idea that Russia's military was planning to re-establish a radar base on Cuba.Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the so-called Lourdes facility, which was shut down in 2001, would remain closed."This matter is not under consideration," Lavrov said at a news conference with Austrian Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik.The RIA Novosti said Lourdes base outside Havana had been used to monitor U.S. government and commercial communications emanating from microwave towers, satellite downlinks and various radio sources.RIA Novosti said some Russian military experts recently suggested that Lourdes could be re-activated as a response to NATO expansion and U.S. plans to establish missile-defense facilities in Eastern Europe.
