Cuba: Situation Report No. 5 “Hurricane Ike” 15 Sep 2008


HAVANA, Cuba, Sept 15 (acn) Russian Federation Vice-president Igor Ivanovich Sechin arrived this Monday at 14.48 hours to Jose Marti International airport in Havana city heading a delegation of Russian entrepreneurs to assess damages and probable help to the island after the passing of Hurricanes Gustav and Ike.In his first statements to the press, Sechin said that “the goal of our trip is to help the Cuban people palliate the consequences of the passing of the storms that have affected the island recently”. The accompanying delegation is made up by Russian entrepreneurs and industry leaders that will assess in what way their help can benefit the Cuban people the most.

Tourists Protected From Effects of Hurricane Ike

HAVANA, Cuba, Sept 15 (acn) Preventive measures taken by Cuban authorities to counter the negative effects of Hurricane Ike kept foreign tourists in the Caribbean Island safe.Authorities took contingency measures that included the evacuation of vacationers from zones hit by the hurricane to safer areas, reported DTC.However, the hotel infrastructure was affected by the storm, including inlay, perimeter fences and glass windows, among other damages.According to reports by the Cuban Tourism Ministry, the tourist resorts more affected are in Playa Pesquero, Holguin, and Santa Lucia in Camaguey. Brigades of skilled workers are repairing the damage to have the hotels ready as soon as possible.
